Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Effective date: November 1, 2026

This policy describes what happens to information when you read archaeolet.de, a small publication about archaeology in Germany, prehistoric Europe and archaeology lectures. The operator is whoever runs the site, and the words we and us refer to the operator.

Visit logs

The servers that deliver our articles keep routine logs. An entry may hold your IP address, the time of the request, the page opened, your browser and device type, and the referring page. We use this to keep the site running, to detect faults and abusive traffic, and to see broadly which articles on excavations or lectures get read. We rely on legitimate interest here, since a reading site cannot stay online and safe without knowing when something breaks.

Cookies and similar technology

The site may set a few cookies or similar storage that pages need in order to display properly. Nothing is in place to profile readers. If the site ever adds analytics, advertising or affiliate tracking, this policy will be updated first and the Cookie Policy page will explain the choices.

Browser controls and opt-out signals

Your browser lets you block or clear cookies, browse privately, or add extensions that limit tracking. If it sends a do-not-track or global privacy signal, we will honour it as an opt-out wherever our tools allow. Blocking storage may change how parts of a page look, but articles should stay readable.

Emails and forms

When you write to [email protected], we receive your address and whatever you include, such as a correction to a site date or a lecture suggestion. We use it to answer you and fix mistakes, because you asked us to. We do not sell messages and will not publish one without your agreement. If a form is ever added, its details will be used only for the purpose stated beside it.

Newsletters

No newsletter is offered at present. If one is introduced, we would use the address you give solely to send what you signed up for, relying on your consent, and every issue would explain how to unsubscribe.

Outside providers

Publishing depends on others, mainly a hosting company and networks that deliver pages quickly. They may handle technical data about your visit so the pages reach you. We embed no video players, social feeds or maps from lecture venues at present. If we ever do, those providers may receive data when the content loads, under their own privacy notices, and we will say so here.

Retention

Access logs are held for a short, limited time before they are erased or boiled down to counts that identify nobody. Emails are kept while they help us answer you, correct an article or meet a legal duty, and are then deleted.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, request corrections or deletion, object to a particular use, or ask for a portable copy, as local law provides. To make a request, email [email protected] and say what you would like. We may ask for proof that the request is yours, and we will reply within the time the law requires.

Withdrawing consent

Where we rely on your consent, you may withdraw it whenever you like. The Cookie Policy page linked in the footer describes how to change your choices, and you can also simply email us.

Complaints to a regulator

Should you feel your data has been mishandled, readers in the EU, EEA or UK can lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority, and readers in Australia can go to the OAIC. Contacting us first is welcome but never a precondition.

Young readers

Archaeolet is written for adults and older students interested in digs, prehistory and public lectures, so archaeolet.de is not aimed at anyone under 13. We do not set out to gather details from young people. A parent whose child has sent a message through the site can email us with the approximate date, and we will delete that message and any reply.

Security

The site is served over encrypted connections, and access to the mailbox is restricted to the operator. Even so, no internet system is fully safe, and we cannot guarantee absolute protection.

International transfers

Hosting and delivery providers may process data outside your own location, where data protection rules can differ. We choose providers that apply reasonable safeguards, and reading the site means you accept that data may travel this way.

Changes to this policy

We may revise this policy when the site changes or the law requires. Whenever the wording of this page is revised, the effective date near its start moves forward to the day of that revision.

Withdrawing consent and complaints

You may take back any consent you gave us at any point; what happened before stays lawful. The cookie policy page lists every cookie this site sets and explains how to change your choice. You also have the right to complain to a regulator: your local data protection authority in the EU, EEA or UK (the ICO in the UK), or the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner in Australia.
